3 Types Of More Engaging Online Training

Updated: Feb 2, 2021

If you are a higher education instructor or a business trainer, chances are that the way you work has changed over the past ten years. After centuries of perfecting a handful of in-person lecture and instructional models, a host of new technologies have now brought many new changes and options to the learning space.

Online learning videos, in particular, have become the cornerstone of many blended training designs. Known as one of the most effective educational tool and very appreciated by people who grew up with YouTube, e-Learning videos provide a unique learning experience for almost any concept or skill.

Conferences and training sessions led by a trainer

Instructor-led lectures and e-Learning videos are one of the most common types of e-Learning videos, because they are essentially the video version of live classroom instruction. And while there are many different ways to record these types of videos, there is an optimal format that best supports learner engagement.

Videos managed by the trainer should show the teacher presenting the training, as well as their additional learning content such as slides or screen sharing.

Demonstrations

Recording live demonstrations has the power to show students how to do something in a much more interesting way. For multi-step processes and things that require physical action, e-Learning videos that show how to do it with narration can, in some cases, be more helpful than watching a demo in person.

In a video, learners have the flexibility to pause, rewind, and slow down reading speed if they didn't learn it the first time. In addition to the learner's ability to control reading, multiple camera angles have the potential to provide a better, more detailed view.

Scenarios and simulations

Video is an extremely useful and effective way to capture scenarios and simulations that show various situations that a learner may encounter when applying specific training. Learners can even be recorded performing their own scenarios.

Scenario and simulation videos are often used to prepare nursing or medical students for interactions with patients, to show scenarios in a mock courtroom, and to teach new managers general skills such as management difficult conversations.

These e-Learning videos can bring the real world into the classroom, allowing students a valuable understanding of new concepts on a much deeper level that better prepares them to use their new skills.
